This glossary explains common peptide and laboratory terms in clear, non-promotional language. Definitions can help visitors read peptide information and documentation with more confidence. They are not instructions for use or medical guidance.

Fundamental terms

Peptide

A peptide is a molecule made from a chain of amino acids connected by peptide bonds. The number and order of the amino acids are part of the molecule’s description.

Amino acid

Amino acids are smaller chemical units that form peptides and proteins. In a peptide sequence, each amino acid is represented by a standard abbreviation or name.

Peptide sequence

A sequence states the order of amino acids in a peptide. It is a structural description, rather than a statement about function or suitability for a particular application.

Molecular weight

Molecular weight is the calculated or measured mass of a molecule, commonly expressed in daltons. It can be used alongside a sequence or analytical information when identifying a material.

Molecular formula

A molecular formula records the kinds and numbers of atoms present in a molecule. It is another way to describe composition at a chemical level.

Analytical and documentation terms

Lyophilised

Lyophilised describes a material that has been freeze-dried. This is a physical form or processing term and does not, by itself, describe the intended use of a material.

HPLC

High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is an analytical technique used to separate components in a sample. A result or chromatogram should be read together with its method and accompanying documentation.

COA

COA is short for Certificate of Analysis. This document may record information about a particular batch, test method or analytical observation. Its value depends on the document’s scope, date and the information it actually contains.

SDS

SDS is short for Safety Data Sheet. Where available, it provides hazard, handling, storage and disposal information in a standardised format.
